 Wayyiqra (Lv) 23: 9 And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying, 10 “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, and you shall say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, and shall reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first-fruits of your harvest to the priest. WHEN DOES THE COUNT BEGIN?

INTRODUCTION:

Following along in our ongoing study of the Mo’edim (appointed times) of יהוה (B’H), we come to another somewhat controversial date that is described in the Torah as “the day after the Sabbath”, and that is the day that the first fruits of the barley harvest are presented as a ‘wave’ offering in the Temple at Y’rushalayim which in turn begins the count of the omer to Shavuot.
The controversy that began in ancient Yisra’el, and continues to this day is wrapped up into the following question; “do we begin the count to Shavuot on the day after the weekly 7th day Shabbat during the week of Unleavened Bread, or do we begin the day after the first day of Unleavened Bread (U.B.), which is of itself a ‘no work’ Shabbat, on whatever day of the week it falls on? This question and it’s surrounding debate was a hot issue during the first century C.E. between the Tzaddukim (Sadducees) and the P’rushim (Pharisees), and by extension, to the “…the sect of the Natsarenes.” (Acts 24:5).
We will use the Biblical and historical record, along with the example left for us through the life and death of Y’shua, to make our determination as to when the Natsarene observed the wave sheaf.

THE TIMING OF THE WAVE SHEAF AS UNDERSTOOD BY THE TZADDUKIM

The Sadducees, who controlled the Temple but did not accept the ‘Mosaic Oral Law’ or the teaching of the ‘resurrection’, interpreted this phrase to mean ‘the day after the regular weekly Sabbath’ during Chag HaMotzi. In other words, the annual wave offering (the beginning of the count of the Omer), was made on the first day of the week (Sunday) following the weekly Shabbat during the Feast of U.B. Thus it did not matter to them on which day Pesach fell, the wave sheaf would always be on a Sunday. That’s why they were so sad, you see! This teaching as adopted by the pagan church, played right into their scenario of a counterfeit ‘sun’ day resurrection.
If we were to chose to follow the pattern set by the Tzedukim, this year (2019) would place the Wave Sheaf on April 28, ALMOST A WEEK AFTER THE FIRST DAY OF U.B.! In their misguided attempt to keep the day of the wave sheaf as always being the day after the weekly 7th day Shabbat, instead of the day after the Shabbat of the 1st day U.B.; their count of the Omer, and the resultant day of Shavuot, will never be correct. That would rob the prophetic significance of Y’shuas resurrection on Abib 16 (April 23, 2009), and remove one very important piece of His identification. How can we prove Y’shuas authentic claim by using the Mo’edim, if we move the Appointed Time so that it does not coincide with the event?  The Wave Sheaf would then always be the day after the weekly 7th day Shabbat and may or may not be the day of His Resurrection!. So much for following the path of the Sadducees!

THE TIMING OF THE WAVE SHEAF AS UNDERSTOOD BY THE P’RUSHIM

If there is any particular group or sect of Judaism that deserves criticism for adding to or taking from HaTorah, it is the P’rushim! Changing times and laws has been synonymous with them since the earliest of days, and the days of Pesach and 1st-day U.B. are a good example of this. However, the day of the Wave Sheaf offering was always understood and taught by them to be the day after the Sabbath of the first day of Unleavened Bread.
Remember that Rabbi Sha’ul was a ‘P’rush of P’rushim’, taught the resurrection, and was labeled a ‘ringleader’ of the sect of the Natsarene. Contrary to what is taught throughout Christianity today, accepting Y’shua as Mashiyach had no effect upon His observance of Torah and the traditions of his fathers, as they conformed to the life and teachings of Y’shua (2 Thes. 2:15;3:6). This, of course, is contrary to what is taught throughout Christianity today. It follows then that just as the P’rushim followed the day after the Shabbat of 1st day U.B. with the Wave Sheaf, so the Natsarene of the first century c.e., and consequently the modern-day restoration of that faith would also do in our time and understanding of Torah.

THE BIBLICAL PATTERN AS ESTABLISHED FOR THE WAVE OFFERING, AND ITS’ FULFILMENT BY Y’SHUA

Was the chronology and pattern set by the Mo’edim of יהוה (B’H’), established through chance or happenstance? Of course, the answer to that question is a resounding ‘no’! Every letter, word, number, ‘jot and tittle’ of Scripture carries with it the mind, person, and plan of our Creator and Redeemer. They present the perfect explanation of our current condition and the exact plan of our rescue from it. When any of this is tampered with by imperfect man, it becomes a lie, a misrepresentation, an inaccuracy, a conflict, a deception, a stumbling block. The pattern of events as spoken of in our introductory text from Vayikra (Lv.) 23,9-14, is a pattern that would be used in conjunction with other Torah texts to prove out exactly, and without error, who the Anointed One of Yisra’el was, is, and will be. It is a pattern that will be seen over again throughout the Mo’edim of יהוה (B’H’).
From ancient times, the Sages of Judaism have repeatedly testified that the Mashiyach of Yisra’el must live a life of perfect obedience in fulfillment of HaTorah, the ‘pattern’ and ‘proof’ for all things. And, as any unbiased student of scripture with an inquiring mind will clearly see, this requirement was, is, and is being met by Y’shua who is Emmanu’el, El who is with us.
So looking at the pattern of the Holy Days immediately surrounding Pesach as described in Lv. 23 we see Chag HaPesach (The Feast of Passover) on Abib 14, followed by the first day of Chag HaMatzot (The Feast of Unleavened Bread, a Shabbat) on Abib 15, followed immediately by First Fruits, and on Abib 16, the day of the Wave Sheaf Offering (whatever days of the week they would fall on would make absolutely no difference). There were no additional days provided for anyone or for any other reason within the pattern set by these three Torah witnesses. Change this pattern in any way, and Y’shua looses His claim to the title “HaMashiyach”!
On the eternal heavenly clock of Elohim, the three- day cycle of Pesach, 1st Day Chag HaMotzi, followed immediately by the 3rd day of the Wave Sheaf would be maintained, and fulfilled exactly by Y’shua (the sign of Yonah), as another sign of His true identity. That He would resurrect as our wave sheaf offering, being the first of the harvest to come, was a lesson sadly lost on those who followed the teachings of the Sadducees (who by the way, did not believe in, or teach the resurrection). Does this mean that Y’shua really did resurrect on a 1st day (Sunday)? It certainly did in the year 30 C.E., exactly 40 years to the day that the Temple would be destroyed by the Roman Army.  

 DO WE AS NATSARENE CELEBRATE THE RESURRECTION?

  But now Messiah has been raised from the dead, and has become the first-fruit of those having fallen asleep. 1Cor 15:20 TS2009 P.P. Col 1:18; 1Pet 1:3; Rev 1:5;
We are not given the mitzvah (commandment) to observe the Wave Sheaf as resurrection day, but yes, while observing this day as commanded we recognize its Messianic fulfillment by YHWH Y’shuati (B’H).  His ‘unspeakable gift’ to all those who had, and would repent and return to our Father while living by the laws of His House, was realized as He fulfilled the promise of the Wave Sheaf.
We celebrate it’s fulfillment through His victory over she’ol and the penalty of sin, by celebrating THE FIRST OF THE SPRING HARVEST, as the day our Messiah presented Himself as the firstfruits of those who would follow. The day of our celebration will always immediately follow Abib 15; the Shabbat of Unleavened Bread, meaning that it might land on the first day of the week, or any other day for that matter, but it will always be on Abib 16, the day of the Wave Sheaf Offering AND the day of His Resurrection!

  2. How do the numbers and their multiples of 7, 10, 49, and 50 factor into this, and why?
  3. What is the Hebraic significance of these numbers and their multiples?
  4. Is there another significant period of time outlined in Torah that incorporates the same sequence of the numbers 7, 10, 49, and 50 and/or their multiples? If so, do you believe it’s just by chance, or is it intentional? If so why?

The Pesach Haggadah:

Just before Abib 13 runs into Abib 14, while gathered in the home or at the site of the meal, take turns reading from Shemot (Ex) 12:1 – 15:21 (important for children that are able, to participate in this reading). Remember that at this time, HaNetzarim did not have the Ketuvim Netzarim (Writings of The Netzarim/New Testament) available.

Pesach Meal (Lamb if possible) Levitically Clean Foods are acceptable (Lv. 11). Don’t forget the Matzo and something to wash it down with! NOT REQUIRED ARE BOILED EGG, SALT, and a special platter to serve these components on (friends, that’s all Rabbinical teaching).

As we consume the meal, let us do so solemnly, guarding our conversation and limiting it to only that required. The exception would be for praise in word, song, or sharing a spiritual blessing with others. While remembering the gift of freedom from oppression and slavery in Egypt, let us not forget Y’shua’s last meal with His Talmidim, and His Unspeakable Sacrifice as our Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Have the Blessing after the meal and that’s it! I’ll see you at U.B.!

This year, Pesach will begin the evening of March 31 to the end of Apr. 1st; and the first-day U.B. on Apr. 2, the last day of U.B. on Apr. 8th which is also Yom HaBikkurim, The Day of Firstfruits. We begin the count of fifty days or seven Shabbats to Shavuot (Pentecost) on that day.

PLEASE REMEMBER:

ALL MALES PARTICIPATING IN PESACH MUST BE CIRCUMCISED!

Shemot (Ex) 12:47 “All the congregation of Yisra’ĕl are to perform it. 48“And when a stranger sojourns with you and shall perform the Pĕsaḥ to יהוה, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and perform it, and he shall be as a native of the land. But let no uncircumcised eat of it. 49“There is one Torah for the native-born and for the stranger who sojourns among you.” (TS2009)

 

As Netzarim Yahudim, we observe Pesach from the end of Abib 13 to the end of the 14th. This 24hr. period is not a Shabbat, and we try to finish our cleaning of the home, including removal of any hametz (leaven or products containing it) no later than mid-day of Abib 14.

We observe the seven days of U.B. with a Qodesh Miqra’ (beginning at the end of the 14th after Pesach, to the end of 15th of Abib (a no work of any kind Shabbat); and a Qodesh Miqra’ from the end of the 20th, to the end of the 21st of Abib (also a no work of any kind Shabbat).

         Unleavened Bread is eaten for the entire 8 day period of Pesach and U.B.

RETHINKING THE PESACH (PASSOVER) CHRONOLOGY

AN INTRODUCTION

THE PROBLEMS AND ERRORS THAT MUST BE OVERCOME IN OUR SEARCH FOR BIBLICAL TRUTH:

Man Made Confusion Mixed with a Lack of Hebraic Understanding

There has been and continues to be, way too much manmade confusion over the exact timing of Pesach and the days of Unleavened Bread. Compounding this problem; both Judaism and Christianity question the validity of required observance of these days for ‘New Covenant’ believers or Goyim (anyone who is not Jewish[1]; those outside the fold/camp of Yisra’el).

Christianity tells us that somehow the ‘law’ (a misinterpretation of the Hebrew word Torah), has been “done away with at the cross”[2]. Judaism teaches (to the relief of most Christians), that Gentiles are excluded from required obedience to all the Mitzvot[3] of Torah (that Gentiles need only observe the “Noachide Laws” to be considered a ‘human’), while they actively discourage obedience to the Torah of YHVH; including His Moedim, since, as they conclude, Goyim are not ‘Jewish’[4]. If you should happen to subscribe to this belief, I would ask that you would please read Sh’mot (Ex.) 12:49; Vayikra (Lev.) 24:22; Bamidbar (Nu.) 9:14; 15:14-16; Rom. 10:12; 1 Cor. 10:17; Gal. 3:28, 29.

All of this is done in complete disregard of specific instruction given in the Tanakh, that Yisra’el is called to be a “Light” unto all nations, teaching Torah observance to native-born and stranger alike, and that the Temple was to be a House of Prayer for all people; not just a select few.

Please; ask yourself this question, “am I an Yisra’elite”? Now most Christians will answer in the affirmative, although they will attempt to spiritualize their answer rather than accepting the fact, that in present reality; they are in fact literal Yisra’elites. As such, they are subject to the same ‘Rules of The House’ (Torah) as their brothers from the tribe of Yahudah (Judah-Jews).

As descendants of the still rebellious Ten Lost Tribes of The House of Yisra’el; Christians are being called out of Babylon, and back to the Torah; with all the blessings and requirements of obedience that go hand in hand with that reality! It makes no difference whether we are a natural branch or grafted in; we are all fed by the same Spiritual Root; it’s the same tree; always has been and always will be[5]! The Tree has a Name, and that Name is Yisra’el. Its Root is our Torah observant “Lion of The Tribe of Yehuda”; Y’shua HaMashiyach who is YHVH Y’shuati (YHVH our Salvation). Therefore, the pattern of ‘oneness’ that we see throughout Scripture is seen again. There is no “church”, no “sect”, or exclusive group other than that of The Torah Observant Camp of Yisra’el who has become as one (echad), with Him; “The Root” of the Tree, and the El of Yisra’el[6]. Of course, this requires a paradigm shift in thinking for Jew and Gentile alike; and we who have already made that shift must accept the fact that, just as with us; spiritual change will occur only to those awakened by, and receptive to, the call of the Ruach HaKadosh.

TORAH AS A ‘SIEVE’

The Torah (our foundation of faith and Scriptural understanding); is the ‘sieve’ through which we must pass all teachings, concepts, or Scriptural understandings. By so doing we will not be misguided or mislead by a false or misleading interpretation of Scripture. It is through the spiritual “eyes” and the “light” of Torah that we must test all things. If a particular teaching or understanding does not hold up to examination through the eyes/light of Torah then it is not of Elohim[7]. We cannot use the Ketuvim Netzarim (Writings of The Nasareans/New Testament) as the proof of Torah and gain the correct understanding of Scripture. At best, that can be considered as ‘circular’ reasoning; or a case of ‘the tail wagging the dog’! This is where many Christians run into problems when attempting to understand the Tanakh/Scriptures (‘Old’ Testament), through the ‘eyes’ of the Writings of the Netzarim, which is not Torah, nor is it Scripture, nor has it been translated without bias and anti-Semitism.

If a Scriptural teaching does not pass the test of Torah, we are either:

  1. Misunderstanding the text or teaching.
  2. Depending upon a poor or ‘paraphrased’ translation of the text[8].
  3. Attempting to place the misunderstanding of a particular text or teaching above the clear “Thus says YHVH” of the Torah.
  4. Following the teachings of man.

THE MO’EDIM (APPOINTED TIMES) OF YHVH

The Spring Feasts/Season of Pesach (Passover)

Introduction:

Begining with Pesach (Passover), The Spring Feasts, which are often referred to as “The Season of Pesach”, begin with the agricultural and astronomical determination of the First day of the first month of the Biblical Calander, which is called “Abib”; and concludes with Chag HaShavuot (Feast of Weeks/Pentecost). These Mo’edim (Times appointed by our Creator) are, Chag HaPesach, Chag HaMotzi, Yom HaBikkurim, and Chag HaShavuot.

  • ABIB 1. Although preparations for the season of Pesach began at least a month earlier in ancient times, it officially begins with the determination that the heads of the Spring barely crop have ripened (when they have become ‘abib’);  in conjunction with the sighting of the first phase of a new moon after the twelveth Biblical Month. This observation (which is made in Eretz Yisra’el / The Land of Yisra’el), results in the proclamation of Rosh Chodesh Abib (the head, or beginning of), the first Biblical Month.
  • ABIB 10. A lamb of the first year is selected for the offering. In Biblical times, the yearling was taken home and kept with the family for four days.
  • Abib 14. Chag HaPesach. At the conclusion of four nights and days (Biblical days begin the evening/night before), between the evenings (Beyn Ha’arbaim) of the 13th and the 14th, and the conclusion of four days; the lamb is slain. The day of Pesach is not a Shabbat, as is the following day, which is the first day of the seven-day feast of Unleavened Bread.
  • Abib 15. Chag HaMotzi (The Feast of Unleavened Bread) begins at the end of the 14th, as it merges with the 15th. It is a seven-day festival that concludes on the 21st of Abib. The first day and the last day of this Feast, are Shabbats.
  • YOM HaBIKKURIM (The Day of First Fruits/The Wave Sheaf). During the week of Unleavened Bread, Yom HaBikkurim occurs on the first day of the week following the weekly Seventh Day Shabbat. The count of 50 days (7 Shabbats) to Shavuot (Pentecost), begins on that day.
  • Chag HaShavuot (Feast of Shavuot/Pentecost). A one-day celebration of the giving of Torah to Kol (All) Yisra’el in fire and smoke at Sinai and the Ruach HaElohim (The Spirit of The Mighty Ones/Spirit of Holiness) being poured out on those come ‘up to Y’rushalyim’ to celebrate the feast.
